With the summer driving season about to move into high gear, a record number of travelers are expected to hit the road this year.

A recently Kelly Blue Book Internet survey is letting drivers know what the best car to take on that road trip would be.

The Jaguar XKR convertible was the top car on the list this year and one of three convertibles to make the final 10.

Road test editors of Kelly Blue Book's Web site chose 10 cars they felt were best suited for road trips, then asked shoppers which of these vehicles they would most like to take on the road this summer.

"In choosing our list, we wanted to include a vehicle for every journey -– from weekend jaunts of one or two people, to weeklong escapades that involve one or two entire families and maybe a dog and a boat," said Jack Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book. "Our selection criteria included all the tangible and intangible need-to-have attributes such as driving enjoyment, passenger comfort, fuel economy and cargo space."

Four of the vehicles were American-made -- Chevrolet Suburban, Dodge Charger SRT8, GMC Acadia and Ford Edge -- although Ford Motor Company did have four cars on the list. The other Ford vehicles were the Jaguar, Land Rover LR3 and Mazda MX-5 hardtop convertible.

DaimlerChrysler and GM each had two cars make the final 10. DaimlerChrysler had the Charger and the Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec, while GM had the Suburban and Acadia.
