A new survey suggests college tuition fees will continue to climb this year, but at a slightly slower pace than in the past two years.
The survey -- by USA Today -- shows that although some schools will see double-digit increases, others are increasing tuition by relatively small percentages.According to the newspaper, the average tuition increase is 9 percent -- about $500. Last year, the average percentage increase was 14 percent.
USA Today reported that the most expensive in-state tuition this year of the 67 schools the newspaper surveyed was Penn State at $10,856, a jump of 12 percent since last year, followed by Rutgers with an 8 percent tuition increase. Many colleges have increased their tuition in the past few years by double digits to help make up for decreases in state funding and increases in operating expenses.
