'Sideways' Tops Golden Globe Nominations

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- The road trip comedy "Sideways" drove straight ahead Monday to lead the 62nd annual Golden Globe nominations, earning seven nods including Best Picture -- Musical or Comedy, Best Actor -- Musical or Comedy for Paul Giamatti and Best Supporting Actor and Actress, respectively, for Thomas Haden Church and Virginia Madsen.
The Howard Hughes biopic "The Aviator" earned the second-most nominations with six, including Best Motion Picture -- Drama, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Supporting Actress for Cate Blanchett and Best Director for Martin Scorsese.Also up for Best Motion Picture -- Drama are "Closer," "Hotel Rwanda," "Kinsey" and "Million Dollar Baby."Taking on "Sideways" for Best Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy are "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "The Incredibles," "Ray" and "The Phantom of the Opera."Jamie Foxx earned two nominations Monday: for Best Actor -- Musical or Comedy for his role as the late musical legend Ray Charles in "Ray" and for Best Supporting Actor, as a cabbie forced to drive a hitman around on a killing spree in "Collateral."In the Best Actor -- Musical or Comedy category, Foxx will face off against Giamatti, Kevin Kline for "De-Lovely," Jim Carrey for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and Kevin Spacey for "Beyond the Sea."Up for the Best Actress -- Musical or Comedy Golden Globe are Annette Bening for "Being Julia," Ashley Judd for "De-Lovely," Emmy Rossum for "The Phantom of the Opera," Kate Winslet for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and Renee Zellweger for "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason."For Best Actress in a Drama, the nominees are Scarlett Johansson for "A Love Song for Bobby Long," Nicole Kidman for "Birth," Imelda Staunton for "Vera Drake," Hilary Swank for "Million Dollar Baby" and Uma Thurman for "Kill Bill Vol. 2."Up for the Best Actor -- Drama Globe are Javier Bardem for "The Sea Inside," Don Cheadle for "The Hotel Rwanda," Johnny Depp for "Finding Neverland," Leonardo DiCaprio for "The Aviator" and Liam Neeson for "Kinsey."Unlike the lead acting nominations, the supporting actor and actress nods are not divided up by category.Taking on Haden Church and Foxx for Best Supporting Actor are David Carradine for "Kill Bill Vol. 2," Morgan Freeman for "Million Dollar Baby" and Clive Owen for "Closer."Facing off against Madsen and Blanchett for the Best Supporting Actress Globe are Laura Linney for "Kinsey," Natalie Portman for "Closer" and Meryl Streep for "The Manchurian Candidate."Taking on Scorsese for the Best Director Globe are Clint Eastwood for "Million Dollar Baby," Marc Forster for "Finding Neverland," Mike Nichols for "Closer" and Alexander Payne for "Sideways."On the television side, the Best Televsion Drama Series nominees are "24," "Deadwood," "Lost," "Nip/Tuck" and "The Sopranos." Up for the Best Comedy Series Globe are "Arrested Development," "Desperate Housewives," "Entourage," "Sex and the City" and "Will & Grace."Up for Best Television Miniseries or Movie are "American Family: Journey of Dreams," "Iron Jawed Angels," "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers," "The Lion in Winter" and "Something the Lord Made."Three "Desperate Housewives" stars -- Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman -- will vie for the Best Actress in a Television Drama Globe. Also up for the award are Debra Messing of "Will & Grace" and Sarah Jessica Parker for "Sex and the City."In the Best Actor category for Television Comedy, the nominees are Jason Bateman for "Arrested Development," Zach Braff for "Scrubs," Larry David for "Curb Your Enthusiasm," Matt LeBlanc for "Joey," Tony Shalhoub for "Monk" and Charlie Sheen for "Two and a Half Men."In the acting categories for Television Drama, the Best Actress nominees are Edie Falco for "The Sopranos," Jennifer Garner for "Alias," Mariska Hargitay for "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," Christine Lahti for "Jack & Bobby" and Joely Richardson for "Nip/Tuck."The Best Actor nominees are Michael Chiklis for "The Shield," Denis Leary for "Rescue Me," Julian McMahon for "Nip/Tuck," Ian McShane for "Deadwood" and James Spader for "Boston Legal."The Golden Globes will be handed out Jan. 16 in Los Angeles. The awards are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is made up of approximately 90 reporters from overseas news outlets.
