Celebrity Chatter: Does Being A Star Make You A Target?

Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio Victims Of Attacks

POSTED: 2:44 pm CDT June 20, 2005

What's the deal with stars being attacked? Just this weekend, Tom Cruise was doused with water and Leonardo DiCaprio was pelted with a beer bottle.

Celebrity Chatter Michelle SolomonSure Cruise is in dire need of a cooldown after his over-the-top performances about his new love, Katie Holmes, but the water attack on London's red carpet was a bit out of line.

Cruise tried to keep his cool as a man from a British television station squirted water on the star while Cruise talked to the media at the London premiere of his movie "War of the Worlds."

The man could face assault charges for the water prank. Cruise reportedly kept asking the man, "Why would you do that? Why would you do that?"

The man and three other people from Britain's Channel 4 television were detained by police, then released. They were shooting the stunt for an entertainment show, which "involves playing light-hearted comedy pranks on celebrities and members of the public," according to British television station.

Hey, doesn't Ashton Kutcher have a show like that called "Punk'd"?

Meanwhile, the TomKat publicity machine keeps churning after news of Cruise's engagement to Holmes burned up press wires Friday.

Consider this bit of info: Holmes, who was born in 1978, was 5 years old when the 19-year-old Cruise starred in "Risky Business and had celebrated her 12th birthday just a few days before Cruise married Nicole Kidman in 1990.

Cruise is 42 and Holmes is 26 for anyone who is counting. Meanwhile, Kidman turned 38 Monday.

News of DiCaprio's mishap traveled fast when frightened friends at a Hollywood party thought the actor had serious injuries after he was pummeled with a beer bottle.

The actor did require 12 stitches to the wound near his ear. The alleged attacker had crashed the private Hollywood party hosted by Paris Hilton's former boyfriend, Rick Solomon (no, he is no relation to this Celebrity Chatter writer).

DiCaprio is fine but may need some minor plastic surgery. Perhaps the stitches should be written into the new movie he's shooting in Boston opposite Matt Damon called "The Departed." DiCaprio plays a cop who infiltrates gangs. The movie is set for release in 2006.

We Told You So

Well, the Runaway Bride is getting her 15 minutes. She's gearing up for her an interview with Katie Couric and -- surprise, surprise -- she's sold her story for an upcoming television movie.

Jennifer Wilbanks if you're listening, if you're getting any money for all of this (which you probably are), how about giving it to charity?

Wilbanks claimed to be abducted and called 911 to report she had been kidnapped near her home and driven more than 1,000 miles to New Mexico.

The search cost her hometown of Duluth, Ga., more than $60,000. Wilbanks has reportedly paid back $13,000.

When will we all stop feeding the media beast that allows people who break the law to become flash-in-pan celebrities?
