'Brokeback Mountain' Tops SAG Nominations

"Brokeback Mountain" topped all film nominees for the 12th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Thursday in Los Angeles with four nods, including Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Heath Ledger. The film, about a forbidden romance between two cowboys over a 20-year period, also grabbed supporting actor nominations for Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams, and a nod for Outstanding Acting Ensemble.

The racially charged drama "Crash" and the Truman Capote biopic "Capote" were next with three SAG nominations each.

Taking on Ledger for Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role are Russell Crowe for "Cinderella Man," Phillip Seymour Hoffman for "Capote," Joaquin Phoenix for "Walk the Line" and Davie Strathairn for "Good Night, and Good Luck."

Up for the SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role are Judi Dench for "Mrs. Henderson Presents," Felicity Huffman for "TransAmerica," Charlize Theron for "North Country," Reese Witherspoon for "Walk the Line" and Ziyi Zhang for "Memoirs of a Geisha."

"Crash" has two actors up for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in Supporting Role - Don Cheadle and Matt Dillon. Also up for the honor are George Clooney for "Syriana," Paul Giamatti for "Cinderella Man" and Gyllenhaal for "Brokeback Mountain."

Taking on "Brokeback Mountain's" Williams for Outstanding Performance by a Supporting Actress are Amy Adams for "Junebug," Catherine Keener for "Capote," Frances McDormand for "North Country" and Rachel Weisz for "The Constant Gardner."

The nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture are "Brokeback Mountain," "Capote," "Crash," "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "Hustle & Flow."

Nominations were also announced for several categories in television.

Up for Outstanding Male Actor in Drama Series are Alan Alda for "The West Wing," Patrick Dempsey for "Grey's Anatomy," Hugh Laurie for "House," Ian McShane for "Deadwood" and Keifer Sutherland for "24."

The nominees for Outstanding Female Actor in a Drama Series are Patricia Arquette for "Medium," Geena Davis for "Commander in Chief," Mariska Hargitay for "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," Sandra Oh for "Grey's Anatomy" and "Kyra Sedgwick for "The Closer."

On the comedy side the Outstanding Male Actor nominees are Larry David for "Curb Your Enthusiasm," Sean Hayes for "Will & Grace," Jason Lee for "My Name is Earl," and William Shatner and James Spader - both for "Boston Legal."

Candice Bergen got a SAG nod for Outstanding Female Actor in a Comedy Series, where she will take on Patricia Heaton for "Everybody Loves Raymond," Felicity Huffman for "Desperate Housewives," Megan Mullally for "Will & Grace" and Mary Louise-Parker for "Weeds."

The contenders for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series are "The Closer," "Grey's Anatomy," "Lost," "Six Feet Under" and "The West Wing.""

Arrested Development," "Boston Legal," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Desperate Housewives," "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "My Name is Earl" are up Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

The guild previously announced that screen legend Shirley Temple Black would be this year's Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

Voted on by membership of the Screen Actors Guild, the 12th annual SAG Awards will be handed out Jan. 29 in Los Angeles.
