'Crash' Among Top Winners At SAG Awards
Hoffman, Witherspoon Win Lead Actor Trophies

The ensemble from "Crash," Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Reese Witherspoon were among the big winners at the 12th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night in Los Angeles.Hoffman won for Best Male Actor in a leading role for playing Truman Capote in the biopic "Capote," while Witherspoon took the trophy for Best Female Lead for playing June Carter in the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line."The racially charged drama "Crash" picked up the last award of the night, for Best Acting Ensemble."It's a film that doesn't end when the credits roll," said Don Cheadle, accepting the award for his fellow cast members. "It's a discussion that we've heard out in the world many, many times, and it's great that it's just started a dialogue about things that people, on the surface, seem not to want to talk about."Also in the film category, Rachel Weisz won for Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role for the political thriller "The Constant Gardener," and Paul Giamatti was named Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role for the boxing drama "Cinderella Man.""Being an actor is a hell of a thing. It's a hell of a thing," Giamatti enthused. "It's up and down. It's great, but I found the best thing about it is hanging around the craft-service table with other actors and crew people, eating doughnuts."On the television side, "Desperate Housewives" took the SAG Award for Best Ensemble for a Comedy series, while "Lost" found "The Actor" statuette for Best Ensemble"A friend of mine always says if you don't have something nice to say about someone, say it," "Lost" co-star Terry O'Quinn, said musingly, to the delight of his surrounding cast members. "This is the saddest collection of climbing, grasping, paranoid, back-stabbing, screen-grabbing schmoozers and losers that you ever saw in your life. But we love each very much."On the drama side, Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Oh won the Best Male and Female Actor SAG Awards for "24" and "Grey's Anatomy," respectively.For comedy, Sean Hayes jokingly thanked "Brokeback Mountain" director Ang Lee for his win for Best Actor for "Will & Grace."Also nominated for Best Female Actor in a Lead Role for the film "TransAmerica," Felicity Huffman won in the television category with a Best Female Actor win for the comedy "Desperate Housewives.""I'm so happy I can make a living at (acting), because I was never very good at math," Huffman said.Honored with television film SAGs were Paul Newman for Best Male Actor, "Empire Falls," and S. Epatha Merkerson, for Best Female Actor for "Lackawanna Blues."Film legend Shirley Temple Black was given the guild's Life Achievement Award for her storied film career, which began at age 5.For advice to others seeking a Life Achievement Award, Temple Black said, "Start early."
