Hilary Swank has revealed that Chad Lowe's substance abuse is partly to blame for their split.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Swank declined to identify the substance she said her husband abused.

"When I found out, it was such a shock because I never thought he'd keep something from me," Swank told the magazine. "And yet, on another level, it was a confirmation of something I was feeling that was keeping us from being completely solid."

Swank said Lowe has been sober for three years now.

She said Lowe's problem wasn't the main reason they broke up, but that they just grew apart.

The couple is in the process of divorcing after eight years of marriage.

The brother of actor Rob Lowe, Chad Lowe, 28, starred on the television series "Life Goes On," which earned him a Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Emmy. He's also appeared on such shows as "Law and Order: SVU," "Without a Trace" and "CSI: Miami."

Swank, 31, won Best Actress Oscars for "Boys Don't Cry" and "Million Dollar Baby." She'll next star in the horror thriller "The Reaping."
