An Army helicopter pilot on leave from his tour of duty in Afghanistan paid a special visit to a school in northern Kentucky Wednesday, surprising his two sons.

Warrant Officer Mike Vinson surprised the classroom at Cornerstone Classical Christian Academy in Lakeside Park. His sons, Noah and Caleb, had no idea he would be coming, Cincinnati TV station WLWT reported.

The students were told that they had a special guest coming in Wednesday morning, but when Vinson walked through the door, his two boys appeared to be in shock. The boys eventually made their way to their father for a big hug.

The classroom Vinson visited made Christmas cards and sent a care package to him over the holidays while he was stationed in Afghanistan.

Vinson told the kids how thankful he was for receiving the gifts. He also got a bit emotional as he talked about seeing his kids.

Vinson is scheduled to return to Afghanistan on Feb. 18.
