Shopping For Fruits, Vegetables

When it comes to their nutrition content, not all fruits and vegetables are created equal. Get even more nutrition from the fruits and vegetables you choose:

  • Usually, the darker the color, the higher the nutrient content. Dark leafy greens such as spinach contain more nutrients than pale ones like iceberg lettuce. Deep orange or red fruit, such as mangos, melon and oranges are richer in vitamins C and A.
  • Buy fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season for the best buy and flavor. Otherwise, canned or frozen varieties that are processed without added sugar, fats or sauces are a good choice.
  • Most produce is virtually fat-free, with the exception of the avocado and coconut.
