How To Repair A Leaky Faucet
Save Money On A Plumber By Fixing It Yourself
The most common cause of a leaky faucet is also the easiest to fix. So before you pick up the phone to call a plumber, gather a few tools and follow these steps.
- The first thing you'll want to do is to turn off the water to the faucet. The handles are usually under your sink marked hot and cold. Turn both knobs all the way to the right.Make things easier by putting the plug in the drain. You'll be glad you did when you drop a small piece of hardware during this project.Next, take an allen wrench and loosen the set screw that holds the handle in place, and take off the handle. You'll notice there's a dome covering the inner workings of the faucet. Take a wrench and unscrew that.Take everything out, with the objective of getting at the ball inside -- which also lifts straight out. You'll notice the seals -- when they're worn -- are the main reason faucets leak.Take a screwdriver and carefully remove the seals and the springs underneath. At this point, you're going simply replace all of the worn parts in the faucet with new parts, usually purchased in a kit from your local hardware store.Make sure to put everything back in the same order. Tighten everything down, and you're done.
