How To Replace A Screen
The last thing you want is your guests to be greated by is an old, ratty screen door.Luckily, with a few tools and a little bit of work, you can replace your old screen door in no time.
- First, take the screen out of the window assembly.
- Laying it flat, remove what's called the spline. That's the retaining strip that keeps the screen in place.
- Then you'll want to get rid of the old screen -- but don't throw it away. Keep it to use as a guide for cutting the new screen.
- Next, cut the amount of screen you need for your project. You'll want to have a little extra on each side but not too much; maybe a 1-inch margin.
- Make sure to buy the same type of screen that you're replacing. If you're replacing fiberglass, buy a roll of fiberglass.
- Set the screen over the frame, and then start attaching it with a new roll of spline. You can use the old spline, but sometimes it's brittle and not worth it.
- Start at any corner, and use a spline roller to put the spline in place. Use the wheel with the groove in it.
- Use one hand to roll, the other hand to keep the screen tight.
- Keep things tight as you turn the corners -- you don't want the screen to bunch up.
- After the spline is in place, you take an exacto knife and cut off the excess screen.
- Put the frame -- now with a new screen -- back into your door. Done!
