Bacteria From Flood Water Can Make You Sick
Health Officials Recommend Wearing Gloves, Boots While Cleaning Up
The flooding water in your basement may look clean, but it's not. In fact, it can make you sick.
The bacteria in the water can cause infections, respiratory problems and even hepatitis.
The Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Health Department said people shouldn't touch it and shouldn't let their kids or pets touch it. When residents clean it up, they should wear rubber boots and gloves. No skin should touch the water. Homeowners should make sure all appliances are unplugged, and if the appliances use gas, the main gas line should be turned off. The water should be cleaned with bleach -- 1 cup per gallon of water. When residents are done with the cleanup, they should use a dehumidifier to really dry things out -- moisture means bacteria. Also, those with flooded basements are also probably going to have to throw away the carpet.
