Carell, Fey Find Right Combination For Action Comedy
UPDATED: 1:21 pm CDT August 20, 2010
'Date Night' (PG-13): Make a date to stay at home to watch "Date Night," a winning action comedy that pairs the comedic talents of Steve Carell and Tina Fey -- the stars of NBC's two biggest sitcoms -- for a night to remember.Carell and Fey play Phil and Claire Foster, a suburban New Jersey couple who live a routine, if not outright boring, existence. The two do manage to get out every week, however, on "date night," where the two dine at the same old place ordering the same old items from the menu.Looking to give their latest date some spark, Phil takes Claire to one of the hottest restaurants in New York City, only to find out that reservations need to be made a month in advance. But when a couple named the Tripplehorns don't answer the call for their seating, Phil jumps at the opportunity as he convinces Claire that they should assume their identities. All goes deliciously for the new "Tripplehorns" until a pair of thugs (Common and Jimmi Simpson) show up, requesting they should step outside. It seems as though the real Tripplehorns had acquired a flash drive with information on it that implicated some very powerful people in the city. In fear for lives and desperate to locate the real couple, Phil and Claire run, drive and/or crash into one situation after another, hoping they will be able to obtain the evidence that will help clear their names.Carell and Fey play the boring suburban couple shtick perfectly, whether their bumbling through a way to "fool around" in bed or mock other dinner patrons by thinking out-loud what sorts of conversations they're having. And while the laughs seem a bit forced on occasion, the duo keep things light and moving with their undeniable comedic chemistry. There's definitely a future there and both should consider working together again.Even though "Date Night" is Carell and Fey's movie, there are plenty of standout supporting performances, from the playfully roguish James Franco and Mila Kunis as the real Tripplehorns, to Ray Liotta as a crime boss and William Fichtner as a shady district attorney. Mark Ruffalo and Kristen Wiig also have brief appearances as the married best friends of Phil and Claire.Perhaps the biggest standout is Mark Wahlberg, who in a rare comedic turn stars as a security expert who helps Phil and Claire out of their predicament. He's shirtless most of the time, and the time the camera spends focusing on his buff bare chest almost qualifies it for its own supporting role.Bonus features: The Blu-ray and DVD come with both the theatrical version and extended version of the movie, featuring scenes not shown in theaters. The discs include audio commentary, production featurettes, a faux "Public Service Announcement" and a gag reel (featuring other outtakes and funny moments not shown in the film's end credits). ’Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ (PG): Forget about what the title says: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" is not at all wimpy.Author Jeff Kinney's hit comic-strip flavored junior novels series gets its first movie chapter -- and it's a page-turning blast. Relative newcomer Zachary Gordon shines as Greg Heffley, a quick-witted preteen entering middle school as a sixth-grader who comes up with schemes to find a place in his wild and unpredictable world.Director Thor Freudenthal ("Hotel for Dogs") finds a creative and effective way to maintain the spirit of the "Wimpy Kid" phenomenon by using the book's stick-figure characters to help tell the story throughout. While the movie has plenty of laughs, there are also quite a few poignant moments layered within. Robert Capron gives a great performance as Greg's best friend, Rowley Jefferson, as does Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris as Greg's presents.Bringing a wickedly funny edge to the movie is Devon Bostick, who stands out as Greg's love-to-hate antagonist older brother Roderick: that would be the same Roderick in the title of a follow-up book in the series. Look for Roderick to rule in a sequel planned for next year.Bonus features: Audio commentary, deleted pages from Greg's diary. The Blu-ray version includes a bonus word from Kinney.
