Today On TV: Fast Food

No matter who you are, at some point, you're likely to find yourself at the drive-thru. Worried that your busy schedule drives you to fast food too often? Exercise physiologist Sue Masemer says not to worry too much.

Taco Johns"Not everything at a fast food place is bad for you. The key is being knowledgeable," she explains.

There's a great amount of information out there that can help you cut the fast food fat, but here are some quick tips to get you started in the right direction.

At McDonald's, a super-size Big Mac, fries, and shake adds up to about 75 grams of fat. A better choice would simply be a hamburger and garden salad with fat-free dressing. Together, the hamburger and salad have just nine grams of fat.

At Burger King, a Double Whopper with cheese alone has 67 grams of fat. Instead, you could try the grilled chicken for a lighter 21 grams.

At breakfast time, an egg biscuit has 21 fat grams. If you should decide to fix it up with sausage and cheese, prepare to have the fat grams doubled.

Subway consistently has lower totals that other fast food places, but that doesn't mean you can't make healthy choices there too. Choosing a whole tuna sandwich with mayonnaise gives you 60 grams of fat. With a veggie sandwich, you'll just get six.

At Taco Bell, don't be fooled by the salad. It may sound harmless, but your body will tell you differently. The taco salad on the menu contains more than 50 grams of fat. A chicken soft taco has a less-offensive ten grams.

You may think dessert has disaster written all over it, but there are still good and bad choices that can be made. At Dairy Queen, a medium breeze made with strawberries and frozen yogurt has only one fat gram. A worse choice would be a chocolate chip cookie dough blizzard with 36.

If after reading this you feel as though you are in a fast food frenzy, don't panic. Just remember when the drive-thru voice asks for your order, you should make the healthy choice your final answer.
