Mystery Cam: Straight, No Chaser
Well, here's this week's. Per usual, click on the picture to get a larger view. Any ideas?
Last Week
In baseball terms, last week was a slow, underhand lob of a pitch straight to a lineup of Mark McGwires. It was Boulder, Colo., and I think I probably picked it so that I could do a lot of lame clues involving "boulder."
There were three in all. The two that my mom would find extremely funny (her favorite joke back in the day involved a placemat that had a picture of a whale on it. The joke was, "Whoa, that's a whale of a placemat!" Yup, that's the humor I grew up with) were "this city rocks" and "if I were bolder." Ho, ho.
The obscure one involved knowing that the ancient Greek guy Sisyphus had to roll a boulder to the top of a hill for eternity as punishment for, um, something. I think he said something about Zeus, or tried to kill him, or turned him into a goat -- those myths all run together after a while.
There was a fourth item ("I'll drink to that") that was not really a reference to anything. It was misinterepreted by a lot of people as a reference to Golden, Colo., where they make Coors. These people were working on a level higher than my "boulder" jokes, and for that, I commend them.
Jerry Cote of Studio City, Calif., was the first to guess correctly, and I'd like to give a personal shout-out to his friends, who, I'm led to believe, will receive this column in a forward. David, Mike, hello! Welcome to our site! The next two were Webcam superstars Elaine J. "Killer" Kelley and Sven "Funky Cold" Medina. Those three had sewn it up within 20 minutes of the column's posting. Gotta get up pretty early, newbies.
Clues:
I could give some very easy clues for this one, but I won't. I could also make up some silly puns, but my contract has been rewritten to include a clause disallowing lame puns. (Sorry, Ma!) So let's just say that this area was settled near Fort Gatlin, a post established (circa 1837) during the Seminole War. It's a center for fruit and vegetables. Fifteen miles south is a famous center for mice and dogs.
There. Straightforward, incisive, factual clues. Nice. Guess the location. I dare you.
