Parishioners Strangle Pastor During Brawl
Congregation Divided Over Church Leadership
Several worshipers were injured last week when a brawl broke out during Sunday prayers.
The Kenya Times reports it took intervention from police to stop part of the congregation from strangling the pastor to death.
The Rev. James Omumia was appointed to helm the Buru Buru Church of God in Nairobi, which has been divided into rival congregations by a dispute over its management.
According to Reuters, church elders had previously dismissed some leaders on charges of financial irregularity.
Some of the congregation turned their backs on the pulpit when Omumia attempted to conduct service.
For more than four hours, the congregation booed, insulted and heckled the pastor.
"Scores of faithful ... were left seriously injured when a free-for-all fistfight erupted," the newspaper said.
