'American Beauty' Tops Golden Globe Nods

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 57th annual Golden Globe nominees are considered a good indicator of who will be nominated for the Academy Awards each year. The association announced 24 award categories -- 13 for film and 11 for television.
"American Beauty" was nominated for best dramatic film, as was "The Insider," "The End of the Affair" and the forthcoming "The Hurricane" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley."
"Insider's" Russell Crowe shared best actor in a dramatic film nominations with Spacey, Denzel Washington for "The Hurricane," Matt Damon in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and Richard Farnesworth for "The Straight Story."
Along with "American Beauty's" Bening, the best actress nominations for a film drama were Julianne Moore for "The End of the Affair," Hilary Swank for "Boys Don't Cry," Sigourney Weaver for "A Map of the World" and Meryl Streep for "Music of the Heart."
Julianne Moore was nominated again this year in the comedy movie category for "An Ideal Husband." Her male lead in that film, Rupert Everett, was also nominated in the best actor category for comedy.
Other best actress nominees in a film comedy are Janet McTier for "Tumbleweeds," Julia Roberts for "Notting Hill," Sharon Stone for "The Muse" and Reese Witherspoon for "Election."
Everett's fellow nominees for best actor in a comedy were Jim Carrey for "Man on the Moon," Robert DeNiro for "Analyze This," Sean Penn for "Sweet and Lowdown" and Hugh Grant for "Notting Hill."
Best comedy film honors went to "Analyze This," "Being John Malkovich," "Man on the Moon," "Notting Hill" and "Toy Story 2."
The Golden Globe best director awards could go to Anthony Minghella for "The Talented Mr. Ripley," Neil Jordan for "The End of the Affair," Norman Jewison for "The Hurricane," Michael Mann for "The Insider" and Sam Mendes for "American Beauty."
NBC's "The West Wing" took top television honors, with two best actor nominations for Martin Sheen and Rob Lowe and a best dramatic series nomination.
Other dramatic series nods went to NBC's "ER," HBO's "The Sopranos," and "Once and Again" and "The Practice," both on ABC.
Best comedy series honors went to "Ally McBeal" on FOX, "Will & Grace" on NBC, HBO's "Sex In The City," and ABC's "Spin City" and "Dharma & Greg."
Barbra Streisand is this year's previously announced recipient of the Golden Globe's Cecil B. DeMille Award for "outstanding contributions to the entertainment field."
The awards will be presented Jan. 23 and broadcast on NBC.
