HONOLULU -- Forgea the dog has had an adventure. For more than three weeks she has been adrift at sea after his owner and crew abandoned the tanker damaged by fire.
Thursday morning she arrived in Hawaii.
Before the dog is allowed to be permanently reunited with its owner, it will have to follow Hawaii's quarantine rules.
Under Hawaii law, the dog must be placed in quarantine for four months.
"She is going to the quarantine facility on Kauai because its a newer facility and not as heavily populated with other dogs and Forgea (pronounced: Hokget) hasn't been around other dogs so we thought this would be a calmer easier way to spend her time in quarantine," said Eve Holt of the Hawaiian Humane Society.
The 2-year-old mixed breed terrier arrived aboard the tug boat American Quest.
Hokget was left aboard the tanker Insiko following a fire on board. One man was killed, and everyone else was rescued by the cruiseliner Norwegian Star.
The Coast Guard had kept tabs on the dog, dropping pizza and granola bars to the deck for her to eat when they discovered the tanker floating lost at sea.
The story has captured international attention. Jay Leno even wants her to appear on his late-night talk show.
