Fight Cancer By Eating Fruits And Vegetables

A Nutritionist Says They Can Help

Cancer Fighting Foods

Your diet is related to your cancer risk.

According to Cleveland Clinic nutritionist Cindy Moore, R.D., eating the right foods can "significantly reduce your risk."

She adds that a recent American Institute of Cancer Research report says eating five servings of fruits and vegetables each day can lower your cancer risk by 20 percent.

Tomato products contain a chemical that helps reduce tumor growth and stimulates chemicals in the body that help reduce cancer.

Moore suggest eating a lot of fruits and vegetables. A few she mentioned are:

  • grapes
  • broccoli
  • cauliflower
  • cabbage
  • onions
  • garlic

"There's a variety of foods that are going to contain a component -- each one has a different component -- but each have a beneficial property that are going to help us reduce our cancer risk," Moore says.

She adds that natural foods are the best, but don't just eat a lot of one particular food.

"Eating a variety of foods, not necessarily concentrating on any particular one -- is going to give you the best benefit," she says.

Moore also recommends incorporating whole wheat or bran in your diet.

You should also know that the fruits and vegetables don't have to be fresh in order to get health benefits. Frozen and canned vegetables and fruit are OK, too.
