Fayetteville Observer-Times -- Includes news, weather, business, "what to do" and military sections. Most impressive: "Backyard Universe," an ordinary-person's guide to the stars.
The Raleigh News and Observer -- Nando Times is one of the first, and one of the best, papers available on the Internet.
The Carteret County News-Times -- Along with a front-page photo, headlines and sports, this coastal county newspaper offers news of commercial and recreational fishing, weather and "governmental resources."
Charlotte Observer -- You know this daily newspaper was serious early about providing an online edition -- it's URL is "charlotte.com." It's front page provides saturation-links to the main stories as well as a link to the entire newspaper, which is put online every day. A dense site.
The Charlotte Post -- This online weekly newspaper is the "voice of the black community" and offers a trio of news stories, commerce and "lifestyle/religion" news.
Courier-Tribune -- The "above the fold" front page of this daily newspaper's Web site is a quick download and offers local news and sports from Asheboro and Randolph counties as well as the surrounding region.
The Daily News -- This site puts all of its goods on the front and offers strings of links to information about the coastal communities of North Carolina as well as local, regional and national sports stories. The download is quick because there are few, if any, images on the site.
The Morning Star -- Out of Wilmington, there's the news and sports coverage, but also information about the local music scene along with basic information about the town.
News & Record -- Out of Greensboro, this daily newspaper's web site puts all of its headlines on the front page and, along with the standards news fare, has added all of its special projects along with a news archive.
Sun Journal -- Out of New Bern, this site puts just a few stories on the front page, promises NASCAR facts every Thursday, and then sells, sells, sells.
Northscape News -- This is the online edition of the Grand Forks Herald that offers daily news, weather, sports and "life" section.
In Forum -- This site is the online version of the Fargo Forum, one of the state's largest and most influential papers. Updated daily, there's also farm and almanac news from this site.
Akron Beacon-Journal -- This Akron paper is obviously very serious about its online edition having landed the "ohio.com" URL. Daily updates, wires, Cleveland sports news, special projects and all the other daily paper regulars from this paper serving the rubber capitol of America.
The Columbus Dispatch -- Daily news, sports, trivia and community information. Now: WBNS-TV online.
The Morning Journal -- This Loraine daily has an impressive, easy to navigate Page One. Full of local news and sports and worth a look just to see a "low key" newspaper Web site.
The Daily Reporter -- This site is an information gateway for Columbus called, "The Central Ohio Source." News is concentrated on business and legal affairs. What's new? Explore central Ohio through their clickable map.
Go Cincinatti -- This site combines the goods from the Cincinatti Enquirer and Cincinatti Post. It has everything one would expect from the site of big-city newspapers, including its columnists and a Web site contest. Enough said.
The Courier -- The basics are here from this site produced by this newspaper covering northwest Ohio along with a "digital cafe" and a news archive. There isn't exactly a laundry list of stories on this frames site, but you can learn who appeared in area courts and why.
Journal-News -- Covering the greater Hamilton area, this site provides two or three daily stories plus a list of the previous week's news broken down by the greater areas of both Hamilton and Middletown. There's local sports and weather, too.
Record-Courier -- Updated every day at 1 p.m., the newest material is on the front page of this frames site. The rest is mainly promotional stuff.
Register-Herald -- The web site from this newspaper based in Eaton on the border with Indiana offers a nice page one photo with four or five local stories. There's school news and local sports.
The Star Beacon -- All the news stories are on the front page of this site, produced on the shores of Lake Erie. The string of stories are the same in sports. There's some weather and regional news also on this site.
Tribune-Chronicle -- Serving Mahoning County (and it's first online newspaper) along with the surrounding area, there's a front page with news, a news section, sports and business.
The Edmond Evening Sun -- Most newspapers have news and weather, but how many offer bizarre sounds you can download for free? Check out "Clixsounds." Also: The Ruff Draft Newspaper.
The Oklahoman -- Not just news of the world and Oklahoma, but also Oklahoma City's Red Cross, League of Women Voters and the Citizens' League. Now: Fun City.
The Lawton Constitution -- This paper serves southwest Oklahoma and its Web site provides half-a-dozen local stories, some sports, a sprinkle of special reports and a "Hank's World" cartoon.
Tulsa World -- Top stories are on the front page of this Tulsa daily newspaper's site. A very impressive list of stories on the news page. Same in sports. Easy to traverse site. There's entertainment and classified for those willing to go anywhere to find "that something special."
Weatherford Daily News -- This site provides some annoying music with every page. Some puts you to sleep while others make you feel you are shopping at Hallmark. It takes awhile to get to the news, weather and sports along with all the weddings (is that a wedding band I hear?).
Oregon News Network -- A service of the state's News-Review, this paper has the day's top stories, a forest-photo gallery, "news wire" and a community calendar.
News-Times -- Based in Newport on the Oregon coast, there's some "general" and business news, court updates, some sports and much information for tourists.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette -- All the top stories from the paper right on the front page. This site includes weather and local sports.
The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News -- News, horoscopes, comics and crosswords - "Philadelphia Online" is a complete newspaper on the web. Now: "Beer Philadelphia."
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review -- News, features and local information about Pittsburgh. This is western Pennsylvania's first online newspaper site.
Bucks County Courier-Times -- Local news, local sports, regional sports and business coverage. Also, more annoying music from this frames site.
Lebanon Daily News -- Local stories from Lebanon and surrounding communities, local sports and columnists along with the comics, a five-day forecast, travel tips, comics and "entertainment on the Web."
The Daily Item -- Covering Sunbury, there are cover stories, local sports, weather from this Central Susquehanna Valley newspaper.
Erie Times News -- All the daily headlines are on the front page of the site. All the other basics are in various departments such as comics, entertainment, and health & fitness.
Express Times -- This paper covers Easton, provides New Jersey news, and items from Bethlehem and Allentown. There are also opinions and an area of contests.
Times Leader -- News headlines, columnists and local sports from the greater Wilkes-Barre area. Everything you need is on the front of this site.
The Post and Courier, Charleston -- Daily updates from the paper and a complete city-information service including shopping and tourism items on "CHARLESTON.NET."
CyberState -- The State Newspaper's Web site does what it's name implies: covers the state. There is what appears to be an endless string of stories, but there is some doubling up between departments (tricky!) Sports coverage of the state's colleges, a community section and coverage of technology. There's columnists and an archive, too.
Myrtle Beach Access -- Covering, you got it, Myrtle Beach. There's some local news, a news search tool, links to national stories, and the all-important weather for this tourist-centered town.
Herald-Journal -- The front page here has the latest news from upstate South Carolina but this site is centered on attracting tourists.
Indian Country Today -- South Dakota recently stepped out into the Net with headline news from Indian Country. News and features that can't be found anywhere else.
Groton Independent -- An archive of stories from the current and past issues of this weekly newspaper. News of the town and links to personal homepages from people in town along with information about Groton.
Chattanooga Free Press -- Daily, local and national news updates plus information about Chattanooga.
The Chattanooga Times -- Classifieds and local links. Extra, cityscape, sports and more ... but finally some daily news.
The Knoxville News-Sentinel -- Local news headlines, contests and, of course, NASCAR results.
Commercial Appeal -- This Memphis daily's online edition has some news, a photo gallery, sports, business and news of the region -- all on the front page. One could expect more from Memphis' paper, especially an Elvis shrine somewhere.
Crossville Chronicle -- Long line of stories over the course of several days in the news section. There's also sports and weather on the site. There's some front page stuff and business and recreation coverage.
Daily News Journal -- Middle Tennessee's News Network provides a busy front page with news centered around Nashville and a front-page pull-down menu to navigate the site. The daily's news stories are strung down that page, solid local sports coverage and state news.
Star Online -- This site combines information from the Elizabethon Star and the Johnson City Star. Starry. The basics are here on a site not trying to offer too much. Solid site.
Nashville Banner Digest -- The daily paper online here, with story teasers all on one page. There's also a searchable archive of stories.
Review-Appeal -- Williamson County's news source. A top story and a couple of headlines on separate pages. Features, sports and business news from this frames site. There's also the basics of life that a county's paper of record publishes.
Arlington Online -- A service of the Star-Telegram, this site provides daily news, weather, sports and -- ghost stories. Also: Surprise?
The Dallas Morning News -- The Morning-News has news, politics, business, sports, the arts and local-events information.
The Houston Chronicle -- News, features and a 1996-97 fine-arts calendar.
The Laredo Morning Times -- News, taste, and trade information from the border town of Laredo, Texas. Ahora: noticias en Espa?ol.
Texnews.com -- A product of the Abilene Reporter-News, this site is big, BIG. Why, it's as big as all of Texas! There's links to pages all across Texas, much local news from Abilene. There's links to the state's AP wire along with sports.
The Canyon News -- The voice of Randall County since 1896 has a handful of front page stories, some weather, and opinion ... and little else.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram -- There is an impressive list of links to news stories from this daily from Dallas' sister city with links to past issues. There's business and sports, along with "? Surprise ?"
Lubbock Avalanche Journal -- A smooth-working site with an impressive list of headlines, coverage of Texas Tech sports, and some regional and state news.
Midland Reporter-Telegram -- It appears that everything the site of this award-winning newspaper has to offer shows up on the front page. There's a news archive, columnists, a "rainbow room" and a "toon page."
The Paris News -- Who can't be intrigued by a Texas town named Paris? A site not trying to do everything, the site's main department links go to news, sports, features, opinion, classifieds, and front page.
Wichita Falls Times Record News -- Pulls together news from Wichita Falls, north Texas and southern Oklahoma. There's a long string of local headlines, some sports and a photo gallery.
Deseret News -- World, national and local news plus the Deseret News archives and the LDS Church News
Salt Lake Tribune -- Lots and lots of local news and plenty of features. The "Science and Medicine" section is a great place for info to help with kid's projects.
Standard.net -- Covering northern Utah, this site covers the basics of news, sports, business and the other standard departments. Also: Utah's 15 most wanted.
Addison Independent -- Local, local, local. Serving Addison County, there's a front page photo, obituaries and a community calender, among other pages.
The Virginia Pilot, Norfolk -- News, weather and sports from Hampton Roads, along with real estate listings, classifieds, jobs and more at this jaunty site. Now: A real-audio tour of the site in two minutes.
Roanoke Times -- Daily news, plus a calendar of events, railroad trivia and rankings of Virginia public schools.
Richmond Times Dispatch -- "Virginia's News Leader" offers top news from the state and Richmond-metro area. There's an impressive list of news stories generated daily, business, sports and "flair."
The Daily Progress -- Out of Charlottesville, there are top stories, a weather check, an archive under construction and a breakdown of where local police will set up weekend radar speed guns?
The News and Advance -- Another newspaper Web site from Virginia Newspapers Inc., this Lynchburg daily's site has top stories, sports and a few odds and ends.
Danville Register & Bee -- Must be in southern Virginia with information from Myrtle Beach and other carolina beaches along with local news and a long list of local links.
Smyth County News & Messenger -- A bi-weekly newspaper that apparently updates its site more often than that. Everything it has to offer is on the front page.
The Virginian-Pilot -- Serving Hampton Roads through a Web site with a pull-down menu navigation, there are headlines from the region, the regulars from newspaper sites (sports, weather, variety-esque information, along with military news, and, how can you not appreciate this, a "fun" section.
Post-Intellegencer -- Everything you'd expect from a big city daily except ... news?
Seattle Times -- This is where Seattle's daily news apparently resides. Dense front page promises a broad and deep site and it delivers in all parts of the paper.
The Tacoma News-Tribune -- This paper will be quick to win far-eastern hearts. From the front page, a link takes viewers to news from Vladivostok. A well-organized daily.
Tri-City Herald -- News, weather and sports updated daily. New to the site? Kennewick Man: The debate that spans 9,000 years.
Virtually Northwest -- Content's provided by the Spokesman-Review and the Associated Press. Breaking news from the great northwest, weather and games. New to the site: Gee Whiz section.
The Daily News Online -- It's unclear where the newspaper that produces this site is located, likely in the "Rose Valley." It includes a couple of daily news stories, regional news, special sections and links to local(?) Web pages.
The Journal -- A weekly newspaper serving the San Juan Islands. A trio or so of daily stories, but the site is dominated by information for tourists including hotels and restaurants.
The Lynden Tribune -- A top story, a news spotlight, some local history and local Web sites from this weekly serving this city amid the mountains.
The Leader -- Serving Port Townsend and Jefferson County. There's "today's news" and "the news." "The news" provides stories by area and type while "today's news" is the day's top story from this coastal region.
The Columbian -- Southern Washington's largest daily newspaper has the AP wire from the state, a summary of local stories, editorials, "cycling," Dr. Universe and "unsolved murders."
The Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram -- There's nearly as much high school content as news at this site. There's also a kids' page with a decent set of links.
The Dominion Post -- Daily news, sports and area entertainment, as well as poems, art and ideas from local youth. Also: University Spotlight.
Bluefield Daily Telegraph -- The entire online edition of this daily serving eastern West Virginia is on the front page. Article summaries with links to the entire story. It's an impressive list of articles, too.
Charleston Daily Mail -- The usual suspects on this afternoon daily. News, sports, business, life, weekend, comics ...
Charleston Gazette -- Top stories from all sections of the paper are on the front. Updated daily.
Register-Herald -- There is a headline list of the day's top stories, state wires, weather, sports and business news from this paper based in Beckley.
Southwest Virginia Enterprise -- Offers a quick bang-bang story on the front of this site, with links to other news sources in Virginia, news from the farm and individual communities served by this newspaper.
The Beloit Daily News -- The big news here? The birth of a white buffalo in 1994 captured international headlines. To Native Americans, the birth of a white buffalo signifies a new age of global unification and spirituality and is the fulfillment of a prophecy. You'll find a complete archive of buffalo stories and other local news as well.
The La Crosse Tribune -- News and obituaries from the Coulee region, Wisconsin, the nation and the world. Also, links to La Crosse-area non-profits and kids' pages on the Net.
The Capital Times, Madison -- A few local stories and links to Reuters for national and international news. New: The Wisconsin quiz.
Milwaukee Journal and Sentinel -- This site has shifted gears. Whereas before, there was nothing but Packers, Packers, Packers, the football stuff's been moved to Packer Plus. The Sentinel now hosts news, business and election information. New: Badger Plus.
Chippewa Herald -- Learn what is going on in town with the one story that appears in the news section. There is an archive, some sports news, and classified for those shoppers willing to travel.
CNI Newspapers -- You can find out what is going on in Milwaukee's suburbs with the Web site from this chain of suburban weeklies. There's the local news and sports along with classifieds.
Door County Advocate -- This weekly newspaper provides an update with what is happening in this popular cabin county. There are short news blurbs on this tourism-centered site.
Green Bay News Chronicle -- This daily newspaper's Web site has the goods from Cheese-head central. There's a front page string of the day's story summaries, local news including a week in review and much information about the community.
Brodhead Independent-Register -- All the headlines right on the front of this site. You can view the entire current issue or explore the archive. You can also register a delivery complaint online.
Plymouth Review -- Learn what is happening in this region of the Dairy State. News, sports, columns, check out what readers think with letters to the editor, along with features and weather and local links.
Laramie Online hosts news, sports, a community calendar and information from the University of Wyoming.
Casper Star-Tribune -- This site, oddly enough, leads with national and international AP wire copy. You have to dig to find the Wyoming briefs. It's a similar situation in the other sections of the newspaper.
Jackson Hole Guide -- "Wyomings oldest and largest weekly newspaper" allows you to stay updated year-round on news from this popular skiing spot. There's a couple of front page story on this site dominated by tourism news.
