New Zealand For Cheap
Well, you should. It's a gorgeous, green place; and it's now in the midst of what the locals call winter -- only a touch colder than what Los Angelenos call winter.
You can stay for seven nights in this underappreciated vacation paradise for $976, including airfare from Los Angeles and seven days' rental of an economy car. The lodgings involve a two-night home stay with a New Zealand farming family, complete with daily breakfast and a home-cooked family meal, and a five-night lodging pass.
But you don't have much time. The deal's good for travel between now and August 23. And, you should probably be aware that the car is a stick shift, with an automatic transmission available for a bit extra.

Oh man! These things are getting too tempting, seriously. I'm thinking about actually going to New Zealand, but now I'm thinking, "Heck, I should go to Holland!"
Untours, an unconventional outfit, can get you (or me, for that matter) to Holland for cheap. Untours, as the name implies, sniffs at the stereotypically micromanaged tour operation. They pride themselves in setting you up in an apartment for two weeks among the real residents, in a less touristy part of the area, and letting you do your thing.
And they pride themselves in being really cheap. Get this: two weeks in a furnished apartment in the lovely university town of Leiden, round-trip air fare from New York, Newark, or Boston (not ideal, I know, but you can get a cheap trip to one of those places, can't you?) and a ten-day Holland Rail Pass for $999/person, based on double occupancy. That's a little over $70/day.
And don't worry, Leiden is easy day-tripping distance from Amsterdam, and the Holland Rail is an exemplary, efficient outfit. And everyone in Holland speaks English, so no worries there.
