Jolie Files For Divorce From Thornton

Actress Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from her husband, Billy Bob Thornton, on Wednesday, just six weeks after the couple officially separated.

Jolie is asking for legal custody of their baby, Maddox, who the couple adopted in March, but said Thornton can have visitation rights.

According to the television program "Extra," the actress requested the right to keep the miscellaneous jewelry and all of her earnings since the couple wed.

Regarding the split, Thornton said Thursday, "It's a sad thing."

News of the divorce procedures follows close on the heels of a recent interview Jolie had with Us magazine where she revealed that she and Billy Bob Thornton had separated.

In that interview, Jolie told Us "it's a very difficult and sad time." She says, "sometimes, you don't see things coming, even though they are happening."

Jolie told Us that Thornton is focused on his music career. And she's focused on the baby they adopted in Cambodia. She and the baby are living in a hotel near their Beverly Hills home. She says she's not sure where Thornton's staying, and they haven't talked in at least a month.

The Oscar winners were married in a Las Vegas 20-minute, no-frills ceremony in May of 2000 after what seemed to be a speed-dating romance.

The wedding took place at the Little Church of the West on the Las Vegas Strip. The bride and groom both wore jeans to say their "I Do's." This is the fifth marriage for Thornton and the second for Jolie.

Thornton won a 1996 Academy Award for the screenplay of "Sling Blade" and was also nominated for best supporting actor in 1999 for "A Simple Plan."

Jolie, the daughter of actor Jon Voight, won an Oscar for her supporting role in "Girl, Interrupted."
