Legendary actor Robert De Niro has been selected by the American Film Institute as the 31st recipient of its Life Achievement Award, the organization announced Friday.

Robert De Niro in 'Showtime'De Niro, who's won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for "The Godfather, Part II" and Best Actor Oscar for "Raging Bull," will be honored at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, Calif., June 12.

"Robert De Niro is one of the greatest actors of his generation," AFI Board of Trustee Chair Howard Stringer said in a statement. "In a career that includes over 60 motion pictures, De Niro's sense of commitment to the character -- both mentally and physically -- has changed the way we look at an actor's contribution to the art form."

In addition to his two wins, De Niro, 59, has received Oscar nominations for "Awakenings," "Cape Fear," "The Deer Hunter" and "Taxi Driver."

De Niro has also starred in a bevy of other notable film roles, including "Mean Streets," 'Bang the Drum Slowly," "Once Upon a Time in America," "New York, New York," "The Untouchables," "Goodfellas," "Casino" and "Wag the Dog."

Typically associated with his dramatic roles, De Niro's credits also include the comedies "Midnight Run," "Meet the Parents," "Showtime" and "Analyze This" -- which co-starred Billy Crystal. De Niro will re-team with Crystal for the sequel to the film, titled "Analyze That" in December.

In addition to his acting jobs over the years, De Niro founded with Jane Rosenthal in 1988 the Tribeca Film Center, a filmmaking facility in New York City.

The organization's Board of Trustees established the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1973. Past recipients have included Fred Astaire, Frank Capra, Henry Fonda, Sidney Poitier, Elizabeth Taylor, Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson and Barbra Streisand. Double Oscar-winner Tom Hanks was honored with the 30th annual award earlier this year.
