The slate of independent films for this year's Sundance Film Festival includes directorial debuts from familiar Hollywood faces.
Among the films in the American Showcase category are "The Maldanado Miracle," from "Frida" star Salma Hayek. A drama about a dying town examining issues of faith when a statue of Jesus appears to bleed, stars Rueben Blades, Christina Cabot and Peter Fonda.
Another familiar name in the category is Matt Dillon, who is making his directorial debut with "City of Ghosts," a thriller where he co-stars with James Caan, Natassha McElhone and Gerard Depardieu.
Mark Illsey, who won a Special Jury Prize in 1999 with "Happy Texas," returns to the festival this year in the American Spectrum category with the Nick Stahl-Racael Leigh Cook drama "Bookies."
Among the competitors in the Documentary Competition are "A Decade Under the Influence," which was co-directed by Richard LaGravenese and Ted Demme, who died in February of a heart attack.
Both the Documentary and the Dramatic Competition categories have 16 entries each. The festival is slated to run Jan. 16-26 in Park City, Utah.
