Celebrity Chatter: Crowe Orders Champagne, Armani For Wedding
'Gladiator' Star Spares No Expense For Wedding
POSTED: 9:51 a.m. EDT April 7, 2003
By the time you read this, Russell Crowe could be off the bachelor block and married to longtime love Danielle Spencer.
To create a fairy-tale wedding, we've heard Crowe has gone to some interesting extremes.
Italian designer Giorgio Armani was flown into Coffs Harbour, 250 miles north of Sydney, Australia, where Crowe's wedding is to be held on his expansive property in the hills Monday at sunset. Armani carried with him -- in locked luggage with tight security guarding the clothes -- the bridal party clothes. Crowe and his bride-to-be recently met with Armani to go over sketches and personally select what both the bridal party and groom's party would wear.
Armani brought from Milan, Italy, Spencer's wedding dress and the dresses for her two bridesmaids, her cousins, Alex Fozard and Anne Sutcliffe. The cost for the women's dresses reportedly carries a price tag of more than $100,000.
Crowe's Armani wedding suits for the men are emblazoned each with the Crowe family crest. The cost for the men's clothing is more than $40,000.
On Saturday, Crowe wore white as he played a friendly game of cricket with the Crowes against the Spencers. He maintained the family crests idea. Each team wore white V-neck sweaters emblazoned with crests on them. By the way, the Crowes won the game.
While it appears that Crowe has just about everything for his fairy-tale wedding, one of his wishes was not granted. He requested that Australian authorities declare the airspace above his farm a no-fly zone. According to published reports, authorities refused to grant the no-fly zone.
Crowe has his own way of keeping out pesky paparazzi in helicopters. Three of his hired helicopters will keep onlookers at bay. He also has 76 guards standing watch at strategic areas of the remote farm.
It's also reported that he has hired four master chefs, and a kitchen and catering staff of over 30. More than $8,000 worth of champagne was ordered.
One of the highlights of the three-day Crowe-Spencer bash will be the arrival of an Aborigine fertility dancer.
"Russell and I agree he will be a dad by the time he's 40," Spencer was quoted as saying in The Sun newspaper.
Spencer, 32, met Crowe on the set of "The Crossing" in 1990. She is a singer, actress and dancer, according to her Web site.
The wedding will take place on Crowe's 39th birthday in a $200,000 chapel he built especially for the ceremony.
The final price tag on the pre-wedding and wedding festivities is in the neighborhood of a little more than $1 million.
The wedding is not expected to be a celebrity fest. Crowe's director for "The Gladiator," Ridley Scott has confirmed he will be at the wedding. Jodie Foster, Nicole Kidman and Meg Ryan have all sent their regards, but will not attend, The Sun reported.
Q: I think I'm in love with Colin Farrell. Can you tell me if he is still single?
-- Rachel, Newton, Mass.
A: The hunky Irish star of the new film "Phone Booth" is still single, although the 27-year-old will become a father in a few months.
Speculation as to who the mother of Farrell's baby is was finally revealed to be model Kim Bordenave who appeared with Farrell at this year's Oscars, but wasn't seen at last week's New York premiere of his new flick.
When he was asked about future plans he said: "Life changes every day, but the real stuff is what's going to happen in six months."
He's been linked with a number of women, including Britney Spears.

I'll Wear My Own Clothes, Thank You
Madonna reportedly didn't like the clothing that "Will and Grace's" costumers selected for her so she decided to wear her own Dolce and Gabbana duds. The singer-actress plays Liz, Karen's new roommate on an episode of the NBC sitcom during May sweeps. The Rumor Mill
Rosie O'Donnell is having her lawyers draw up papers over a story a tabloid wrote saying that her live-in partner Kelli Carpenter was leaving O'Donnell and taking her new baby with her. She's calling for the sheet to retract the story, but she could continue the lawsuit even if the report is called back. Stay tuned. In other rumor news, cameraman Danny Moder is squashing stories that he and his movie star wife, Julia Roberts, will be splitting after only nine months together. Moder talked to reporters outside of the couple's beach house in Venice, Calif., saying that "Everything is fine with our marriage. I've heard about the rumors, but it's not true. We are fine," he said. Rumors started swirling when Roberts appeared at the Oscars without her husband on her arm. Published reports said the couple was bickering over the stress of trying to have a baby. Reports in London's Daily Mail said that Roberts had grown tired of her marriage and had contacted lawyers.Bizarre Behavior Explained
After a bizarre display two weeks ago at a New York Knicks game, fashion designer Calvin Klein has entered a drug treatment clinic. "For many years, I've been able to successfully address my substance abuse issues, which for anyone is a lifelong process, through strict adherence to counseling and regular attendance at meetings," Klein said in a statement Saturday. "However, when I recently stopped attending meetings regularly, I suffered a setback." Klein entered the Hazelden Institute in Minnesota for alcohol and prescription abuse in 1988. A photo of a disheveled and haggard-looking Klein, 60, appeared in New York newspapers a few weeks ago being escorted to his seat by security guards at a Knicks game. Klein apparently had walked up to Knicks player Latrell Sprewell in the middle of the game as he was about to throw a pass. Klein was nabbed by security guards taken to his seat. The basketball player said Klein was mumbling and he couldn't understand what he was saying.Safety, First
Nicole Kidman wants better security and a private entrance to her new $8 million condominium she just bought in New York City. She feels she and her two children need a separate back entrance to the posh penthouse for security reasons. Other celebrities live in the Perry Street building, however. Her neighbors are Calvin Klein and Jay-Z. The building has 24-hour security. Meanwhile, Kidman's management camp is trying to talk her out of her next movie role. Kidman is said to be considering the role of ex-Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, according to news.com.au. "Her publicist has told her she could be setting herself up for a fall by playing a role like this," a source told a London newspaper. Fleiss appeared on a British Broadcasting Corp. show saying that Kidman had already been cast and that she was the only choice to play her in a movie. "I think a few days with me and I'll make her the best madam on Earth," Fleiss said. No word on a definite commitment to the film, which is titled "Pay the Girl," from Kidman's camp.Celebrity Q&A
