'X-Men' Follow-Up Debuting In 93 Markets
POSTED: 10:22 p.m. EDT April 24, 2003
In a week, the X-Men are going to take over the world -- or, at least, take over theaters all over the world.
According to 20th Century Fox, "X2: X-Men United" will get the largest ever global day-and-date release when it hits theaters May 2. The film -- the sequel to 2000 blockbuster "X-Men" -- will make movie history as it opens simultaneously in 93 markets
In "X2," a high-profile attack by an apparent mutant prompts former Army Cmdr. William Stryker (Brian Cox) to press forward with his anti-mutant program, which begins with a military offensive on Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his school for the gifted.
The film -- which continues the story of a future society that scorns mutants among their population -- signals the return of all the first movie's original cast members.
In addition to Stewart, reprising their roles from "X-Men" are Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Halle Berry (Storm), Famke Janssen (Jean Grey), Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops) and Anna Paquin (Rogue).
Directed by Bryan Singer, "X-Men" grossed over $300 million worldwide during its theatrical run. Singer returns to his filmmaker duties for "X2."
