An Arizona State University student had a foot amputated after she was caught in the Haiti earthquake, KPHO-TV in Phoenix reported.

Graduate student Christa Brelsford said on Thursday she's grateful for the care she's been giving after the building she was in collapsed 12 miles south of Port-au-Prince.

“I’m very thankful to be back in the U.S.," Brelsford said.

Her right foot was so badly damaged that it had to be amputated.

"Shin, bone caught onto the stairwell," Brelsford said.

She had only been in Haiti for 11 days and was working with her brother in an adult literacy program when the earthquake struck.

It took her brother and others 30 minutes to get her free.

"First, I want to be OK, out of there," Brelsford said.

With so many hospitals in Haiti damaged, she was one of many rushed to Miami to get help.

Breslford wasn't sure if would rush back to Haiti.

"I don't know, I haven't really thought about the future right now," Brelsford said.
