There are new developments in the investigation of an abandoned 2-year-old whose parents have yet to be found. The toddler, (pictured, left), was found wandering the streets in an East Bakersfield neighborhood in May.

A voice message believed to be from the boy's mother has been released for the public to hear.

Bakersfield police are calling the message credible and they said they are releasing the message in the hopes that someone will recognize and identify the voice.

According to KERO-TV in Bakersfield, the woman in the voice mail made several startling statements about the boy's real identity, her health and the boy's "unhappy" home life.

The message begins with the woman saying, "I'm the mother of the baby, the one that is on the TV. He is with navy blue shorts, Nike tennis shoes and a yellow shirt."

"We think it's her because of some of the information she provided," said Sgt. Hajir Nuriddin from the Bakersfield Police Department.

Police believed the boy's name was Mateo but all that changed when they received the message. The woman said the boy's name was Jesus Perez Flores. She said she let him go because she is sick.

"If he could be adopted, I would appreciate it because I'm sick with cancer and I could die at any minute. I leave you my baby," said the woman in the message.

In the message, the woman gave another reason why she thinks he would be better off with another family.

"I want him adopted because we are very mistreated. I don't want my baby to be mistreated anymore. My baby is very mistreated. In your hands I leave him." she added.

Police say Mateo, or Jesus, is doing fine in foster care. Meanwhile, they say they would like to find the woman who left the message.

"We want to know why was the baby left there, who left the baby there and what happened. We are trying our best to conduct a professional and thorough investigation to determine what actually happened," Nuriddin said.

Anyone with information regarding the toddler is asked to contact the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
