Vegas Q&A: Aren't Summer Prices Supposed To Drop?
UPDATED: 10:36 a.m. EDT June 30, 2003
Question: What's with the high prices going on in Vegas during July and August? I thought that's when you could get cheaper rates because it's so hot there, but I've been pricing trips and haven't been seeing much of a difference.
Answer: July and August are usually cheaper, yes, but it looks like things might be changing a little -- at least as it relates to weekends.
In the past, most people have avoided Las Vegas in the summer not only because it's so hot but because that's "vacation" time, and they go off to other places, leaving Vegas for the long weekends. But now, more people prefer shorter trips where they can drive to locations rather than long trips where they have to fly.
This means that weekend summer rates are remaining pretty high, so if you're planning a trip, try to go during the week when prices are still very, very low. I did a quick check on the Vegas4Visitors.com reservations system for random dates in August and found prices as low as $35 during the week for very decent hotels (not Bellagio, of course).
Your other option is to "chance it" and wait to book your trip until the last minute. Hotels keep rates high as long as long as booking remains strong, but as they approach those dates and aren't sold out, the prices will start dropping in an effort to fill those empty rooms.
