A black Labrador named Maya from the northwest side of Chicago is being called a hero after she saved a boy who was being attacked by a pit bull.

Late last month, a neighbor's pit bull got out of its yard and attacked a child who was passing by, Chicago TV station WMAQ reported.

"The dog just kept rushing. It just charged the boy and jumped on him," neighbor Dawn Montiel said.

Montiel and her son, Michael, were watching from inside their house. They grabbed a stick and headed for the door.

"We were going to come out and hit the dog to get the dog off the boy, but she (the Labrador) heard the boy screaming," Montiel said. "When I put my hand on the doorknob to open the door, she just knocked me down, knocked him into the wall, and she didn't touch one step."

Maya attacked the pit bull, saving the boy.

"She just jumped onto the pit bull, and she did bite the pit bull, and that's what made it release the boy," Montiel said.

Police said the 12-year-old boy, whose name was not released, was injured but is recovering.

But Maya still had trouble. The pit bull dragged her inside the house. Then police showed up and saved Maya by shooting the pit bull.

Maya was wounded, and she may need some more surgery. However, she should be OK.

"She's the best dog ever, and she's wonderful," Michael said. "She's smart, very smart."

The owner of the pit bull was ticketed for not having his dog restrained.
