Streisand Honored By AFI
Stars Recall Fond Memories Of Working With The Entertainer
She didn't say much on her way into the ceremony -- just that she was "honored." But her Hollywood friends and colleagues had a lot to say.
Sidney Poitier said Streisand is so talented, she should have gotten the lifetime achievement award when she was 15. Amy Irving remembers laughing "a lot" while the two worked together on "Yentl."
Irving said, "If you had cramps, she'd have the right pill for you."
That was a perk of working with a female director, she added with enthusiam.
Kathie Lee Gifford says her own life changed the first time she heard Streisand's recording of "People" on the radio.
Gifford says from that moment on she had to be "around that." Not only "around that" but "stalk that."
Streisand has been nominated for five Oscars, winning twice as best actress for "Funny Girl" (1968) and for co-writer for best original song for "Evergreen" from "A Star Is Born" in 1977.
She has produced directed and starred in several other films, including "Hello Dolly" (1969), "The Way We Were" (1973) and "The Prince of Tides" (1991). Her most recent screen appearance came in 1996 with "The Mirror Has Two Faces," which she also produced and directed.
