Testosterone Patch Increases Sex Drive Of Women
Side Effects Include Facial Hair, Acne
Experimental testosterone patches were given to women in the New England Journal of Medicine study.
Before the patch, 23 percent of women participating in the study reported having sexual intercourse once a week. After the patch, the figure increased to 41.
Dr. Wulf Utian, executive director of the North American Menopause Society, said that the research will help destroy the old stereotype that sexuality is unimportant or disappears in old age.
The society is holding its annual meeting in Orlando this week.
Doctors say that testosterone, a male hormone, has been used for years in the treatment of sexual dysfunction in the aging population, but it has not been researched very much.
Some side effects of the testosterone patch include an increased amount of facial hair and acne.
