Make Small Rooms Look Larger
Use Furniture That Has More Than One Function
Are you stuck with a room that always looks cramped?
Interior designer Bonnie Banks shared some tricks to making a small room look bigger -- just by changing the furniture. For example, she used an armless chair, a sofa that blends well with the wall and convertible furniture.
"With a piece of convertible furniture, when you're not using it, you can let it down and it can create a nice pathway," Banks said.
Banks said that a round table is also a good idea for smaller rooms.
"A round table will seat more people," she said. "We can seat eight to 10 people at family gatherings and then, when it's not in use for dining, you can walk around it without bumping into corners."
Banks said that hallways serve as a great spot to put a gallery of paintings and photos. She also said that using furniture that has more than one function is important to getting the most out of your spaces.
"In a small space, everything counts," she said. "An ottoman serves as a footstool, a cocktail table and extra seating.
"Use a desk that has a bookshelf above, a secretary for writing and drawers below for storage."
Banks also recommended minimizing knickknacks and window treatments in small spaces.
