'Red Dragon' Was First Book To Feature Lecter Character

More actors appear to be biting into the idea of starring along with Anthony Hopkins in the new Hannibal Lecter prequel.

'Hannibal'According to the Hollywood Reporter, Edward Norton ("The Score") and Emily Watson ("Hilary and Jackie") are in final negotiations to join Hopkins for "Red Dragon," a prequel to the 1991 thriller "Silence of the Lambs."

"Hannibal," the sequel to "Silence," came out in theaters earlier this year.

"Red Dragon" is based on the Thomas Harris novel of the same name. The 1981 novel was adapted for the big screen in 1986, but was titled "Manhunter." Actor Brian Cox starred in that film as Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter.

According to the Reporter, Norton will play FBI agent Will Graham, who seeks the help of Lecter to solve a case.

Watson will play Reba, a blind woman who works for the title character. Norton and Watson's roles were played by "CSI" star William Petersen and Joan Allen, respectively, in "Manhunter."

The screenplay for the new "Red Dragon" adaptation is being written by Ted Tally, who won an Oscar for his "Silence of the Lambs" script. The film, set to go in production this fall, will be directed by Brett Ratner. Ratner most recently helmed "Rush Hour 2."
