LOS ANGELES -- Did anyone wonder why the cameras had such a tight shot on Jennifer Lopez’s face when she presented the award for Best Song? Well, remember, the Oscars are live and there are things that are a no-no on national television.

Wearing a see-through top is definitely a big no-no.

Jennifer LopezSurprise! Lopez stopped traffic again. After her overtly revealing dress at the Grammys, she was a bit more discreet at the virtuous Academy Awards, but not by much.

Her gray and white ensemble looked tame enough, but a closer look revealed a sheer sheath at the top and Jennifer bared all above the waist. After all, she was wearing Chanel. Who knew?

Versace, Armani, Stella McCartney, Christian Dior, couture.

Each year, designers line up to dress the stars. They construct one-of-a-kind dresses for the chance to get mounds of free publicity. The celebs don’t have to pay a dime; the designers just hope they get a mention.

Bjork opted to not thank anyone for the strangled swan draped around her neck. A "friend" designed it for her. Julia Roberts shopped the used store and wore vintage Valentino.

Sigourney Weaver chose Christian Dior to drape her statuesque frame, and Stella McCartney, Madonna’s personal wedding dresser, clothed everyone from Sting’s young daughter, Coco, to Goldie Hawn’s daughter, Kate Hudson.

"Chocolat’s" Juliette Binoche was draped in pearls that Jean Paul Gaultier helped her with to give the right touch to her black dress.

"The Contender’s" Joan Allen wore a Michael Kors creation which was decorated with real coral beads. Goldie Hawn chose a light pastel gown by Vera Wang to show off her blonde hair. Black never goes out of style as Catherine Zeta-Jones proved in a strapless wonder of a gown, and Julia Andrews also proved that black is the best way to exude sophistication.

Russell Crowe outside Shrine The men were dressed in Armani primarily, but the looks weren't the traditional tux. Silk tunic shirts (Ed Harris), upscale suits and ties (host Steve Martin, Geoffrey Rush, Ben Affleck, Kevin Spacey), variations on the tux (Anthony Hopkins colorful bow tie, Russell Crowe’s Texas tie).

Hollywood is about glamour, and although we’ve seen some oddball outfits (who could forget Cher’s get ups), the Red Carpet is still the place where Hollywood, for just one night, is truly the land of make-believe.
