Magnolia

Magnolia

Magnolia might be all right but I couldn't hear it!!! I didn't like the effect of talking through the music, the lyrics were bad and didn't add any insight. This is a depressing soap opera and will vanish like the television cop show where actors sang the dialog. Hollywood: QUIT GIVING SO MUCH POWER TO THE SOUND MAN!!!!!!

I just saw "Magnolia" and thought it was a brilliant film! First of all, Tom Cruise was at his best, as I've never seen him before. He just commanded the screen when he was on, which wasn't enough, but then their were so many characters in it with a story to be told by all. It has a very special message if you just watch, listen, and behold all that it expells. My only criticism was the music of Aimee Mann which at times was meant to drown out the dialogue. I think P.T. Anderson is definitely a director to watch. A stellar cast besides Tom Cruise, including John C. Reilley, Phillip Seymour Hoffmann, who turned in very moving performances. I highly recommend this film.

Bicentennial Man

Bicentennial Man

How can anyone who sees "Bicentennial Man" not love it? I think whom ever it is that rates the movies needs to get a new job. Not only was it a 5 star A+++ movie. It was well made and well performed by all the actors. Robin Williams does not do junk! This was truly a work of heart. Way to go everyone in Bicentennial Man! WE LOVED IT!

Cradle Will Rock

Cradle Will Rock

Though the first hour was a bit confusing , the last hour, the play itself was marvelous. This is a part of our history that many younger people don't know about. And they no longer know enough about the importance and value of unions for the American people. The show within a show was terrific and inspiring and I felt like jumping up in the movie shouting and cheering for the union and the people myself. I began teaching in NYC before this was much of a union, so I know what our working conditions and pay were like.

The Talented Mr. Ripley

The Talented Mr. Ripley

I really enjoyed this movie. It was dark and suspenseful and well-acted! Matt Damon does a wonderful job of disguising himself as Ripley. Jude Law also succeeds in being the vain playboy. The ending is very much the surprise because you want to see Ripley caught. But, I think this type of ending is just as well. The author is letting the audience make their own conclusion about Ripley's fate. You pretty much can guess that he will be caught. The story is one that makes you think. The way Ripley feels is a way many people have felt at one time or another in their own lives.

"The Talented Mr. Ripley" does, indeed, show off great acting and great scenery. Obviously, professional critics won't dare come down on the Miramax PR machine, but this is not a movie I will recommend to my friends. It is not Hitchcock suspense. It is unique, I will agree, but it is not entertaining. The ending is not an ending (even though it seemed that the movie had ended about three times before the actual non-ending). The novel may be wonderful, but this film is completely missable even on video. I feel sorry for any guy who takes a date (especially a first date) to this film. And, for the record, there is gratuitous blood and gore in the film, It wasn't necessary, but added to the overall "groans" I heard in the theatre.

Any Given Sunday

Any Given Sunday

After reading the scathing reviews it's hard to believe that I went to see the same movie that these "critics" saw. I absolutely LOVED this movie. As a diehard football fanatic and one of Pacino's biggest fans, I went into this movie to be entertained. And entertained I was! Did people actually think they were going to witness a football documentary? Did they hope to learn something about the game that they didn't already know? I thought this role was perfect for Pacino and his locker room scenes were unsurpassed. Sure, there were some pointless scenes that could have easily been deleted, however, overall I think this movie scores big. Jamie Foxx was excellent in his role and even Lawrence Taylor did a darn good job. I wish these weekend critics would stop trying to be Siskel & Ebert and just go to a movie for the pure enjoyment of it.

"Any Given Sunday" obviously is not for everyone. It is definitely a guys movie, so don't bring your wife or a date. I think that Oliver Stone is actually ahead of the curve on this one myself. The old prototype of quarterback-white, 6' ' 4 ", and a pure drop back passer, are beginning to become obsolete because the game is too fast for that type of player. Sure, it was profane and off the wall, but wouldn't you expect the most violent game be that way? And, yes, there actually is a positive message in the movie, which I found refreshing for a Stone movie. I would say it is worth renting to watch.

Galaxy Quest

Galaxy Quest

I have to stop depending on reviews by Roger Ebert. Galaxy Quest was one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time. The story line was as lame as the comedy. If not for the special animation effects the movie would have no substance at all. I convinced my wife that this would be a fun movie and now all I hear is I owe her big.

The Green Mile

The Green Mile

"The Green Mile" has to be one of the best movies I have ever seen. I was entranced the whole time by the different storylines, the depth of the characters, the messages it conveyed and the fantastic acting. The actor who portrayed Coffee should get an Oscar nod, and of course Tom Hanks is always great. What a wonderful and life-changing experience this movie was. Makes me want to read the book.

Popcorn PopcornPopcorn PopcornThis was undoubtedly the best movie of the year. Any movie that can make me laugh and cry to the point of still tearing up several weeks later has to be a once-in-a-blue-moon experience. This movie had an outstanding script. Mr. King should be very pleased with the outcome. I admit that I did read the story as it unfolded in the serial novel. I never expected his script to come close to the emotion and suspense of the serials. Much to my surprise it even improved on it. The story is much tighter and has better flow than Kings books. The thoughts that this movie provokes are endless. For instance how can one not see the references to Christ and Christianity. Furthermore, it forces you to have an confront your opinion about the death penalty. It also made me think a great deal about discrimination.
