What About The Numbers?

More than any other disease, Americans fear cancer, a term that encompasses more than 100 different diseases. This year, nearly 1.4 million people in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer, and about 560,000 people are expected to die of it -- more than 1,500 people a day. The National Cancer Institute reports that one of every four deaths in the United States is from cancer.

How many people alive today have ever had cancer?

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 10 million Americans are estimated to have a history of cancer. Many of these cases can be considered cured, and others may have no evidence of cancer.

How many new cases are expected this year?

About 1.3 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed. That number does not include certain types of skin cancer.
