OMAHA, Neb. -- An Omaha man was arrested Sunday after he told officers he jumped off the Interstate 480 bridge over the Missouri River just for fun.

The man's name is David Kight (pictured, left). Police said Kight originally told them he was from California. Officers later learned he lives in Omaha.

A KETV NewsWatch 7 crew asked Kight why he jumped as he was being led away by an officer. "Because I wanted to. Because it was a fun thing to do," he said.

However, officers were not amused. The swift-moving water and debris in the river can be deadly.

"And it's the fact that someone, a well-meaning and a good person, would jump in to save a guy like this and the fact that they might drown just because someone is being so stupid," Sgt. Kirk Kunze said.

Witnesses said they saw Kight jump from the I-480 bridge just before 5 p.m.

He now faces several charges including trespassing and giving false information to police.
