SAN DIEGO, 5:05 p.m. EST March 9, 2001 -- Doug Flutie is the new starting quarterback for the San Diego Chargers. He's agreed to a six-year contract with the team.
Flutie will step into the starting job vacated when Ryan Leaf was released last week.
The 5-foot-10 Flutie was immensely popular in Buffalo for the past three seasons, where he racked up a 21-9 record as a starter. He was cut by the Bills last week when they decided to give their starting job to backup Rob Johnson.
