Vegas Q&A: Safe City For Teens?
LAS VEGAS, 11:49 a.m. EDT June 25, 2001 -- Every week I answer questions from readers just like you. If you'd like to submit a question for the Vegas Q&A, look for the form below.
Question: My teenage daughter is traveling to Las Vegas with friends this August. How safe is the city for beautiful young teenage girls traveling alone?
-- Judy in Hamilton, Bermuda Answer: Wow, Judy -- you're a trusting mother, aren't you?
I'll skip the part about wondering what teenagers are going to do in Vegas since they obviously can't gamble or drink (at least legally) and skip to the safety issue.
First, you must absolutely insist that they do not leave the heavily trafficked tourist areas of The Strip. As long as they stick to the areas where there are tons of people, security cameras and guards, there shouldn't be any problems. The major hotels are the places where they are going to find the most entertainment, anyway, so hopefully that's where they'll want to be.
If they insist going off to explore other parts of the city, tell them only to do it during the day. Vegas is a pretty safe city, but it's still a city, and teenage girls shouldn't be out wandering around at night anywhere.
You should also tell them to leave purses and the like in their room and to carry money and keys in front, interior pockets. This will make them less likely targets for purse-snatchers and other thieves, who are rare on The Strip, but they are out there.
Also make sure that when they are in their rooms, they keep the safety deadbolts locked and to review the fire safety information as soon as they get there.
I'm way too co-dependent for this. Are you sure you want your teenage daughter to go to Vegas? I'm going to be worrying the entire time.
Seriously, though -- as long as they follow the same sort of common-sense measures they would in any city, they should be fine. Tell them to have a good time from me.
