Nintendo Powers Up Wii Production

Popularity Creates Video Game Shortages

POSTED: 8:23 am CDT April 27, 2007

Nintendo's president said a shortage of the Wii game machine is abnormal and promises to boost deliveries.

The comments came a day after Nintendo reported that total sales nearly doubled for the fiscal year, lifted by robust sales of the Wii and the DS portable, a handheld video game.

The Wii comes with a wand that can be used as a sword, tennis racket or fishing rod, depending on the game.

Nintendo is ramping up amid the head-to-head battle among next-generation video game consoles; Sony's PlayStation 3, which has been plagued with production problems, and Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Earlier this week, sales numbers showed Wii beating its more powerful competitors in March sales.

Last week, technology Web sites were touting leaked copies of Sunday newspaper advertising that indicated that all Best Buy stores would have Wiis, leading to lines at some stores.
