Don't Settle When It Comes To Texas Lodging

By Steve Thompson, Contributing writer

Hotels and motels are unarguably popular choices for families on vacation and professionals traveling for business. However, the impersonal, institutional feel of a hotel can put a damper on any visit to a new place, so why not stay in a Texas inn or bed-and-breakfast that offers a taste of history as well as comfort?

If you are traveling to Texas in the near future, these hotel alternatives are sure to put the spark back in your vacation.

Two Wee Cottages

One of the most popular Texas bed-and-breakfasts, Two Wee Cottages is often booked months in advance and is located in the historic town of Fredericksburg. The two cottages for which the location is named -- Granny Hein House and My Little House -- are secluded within groves of pecan trees in the Texas Hill Country, and resemble quaint turn-of-the-century cabins with vintage furnishings and well-maintained construction.

Each of the cottages is equipped with a private hot tub, a television, fully-stocked kitchens and high-count linens. A Continental breakfast is served each morning at your door, complete with fresh-baked bread and pastries in addition to cereal, juice and other breakfast staples. More important, Two Wee Cottages is the perfect atmosphere for a visit to Fredericksburg, where small-town friendliness, antique shops and historical homes abound.

Villa del Rio

Del Rio is considered a favorite destination for Texans who enjoy getting a taste of the border, and the Villa del Rio Bed & Breakfast is the ultimate place to stay. It is the oldest and largest historic mansion in West Texas, and has received rave reviews from numerous publications including the Houston Chronicle and Texas Monthly.

Established in 1887, Villa del Rio offers three guest rooms and a single cottage, all decorated with period furnishings. You'll have access to the famous Alamo Village, the legendary Val Verde Winery and the gorgeous Lake Amistad. However, you might not want to leave the Villa as there is plenty to see and do on-site, from bird-watching to 4,600 square feet of beautiful rooms to explore.

Hidden Oaks

There are plenty of beautiful hotels in Houston, but why not get a taste of southern hospitality at the Hidden Oaks b&b? It was built in 1927 by a member of one of the oldest families in Texas, carving out a chunk of history as well as a beautiful piece of real estate. Four unique suites offer mini-fridges, microwaves, cable television, free wireless Internet service and in-room breakfast.

Hudspeth House

The Hudspeth House Bed and Breakfast in the panhandle town of Canyon offers peace and quiet as well as luxurious amenities. Canyon is well-known as the primary place where Georgia O'Keeffe worked, and this Victorian home served as a common dining establishment for the artist. Here you will find eight rooms of varying sizes and amenities, from king size beds to cable television, and many of the rooms showcase O'Keeffe's paintings.

Ye Kendall Inn

You can't visit the Texas Hill Country -- or, more specifically, Bourne -- without a stay at Ye Kendall Inn. Established in 1859, the Kendall has been restored to its former splendor and features 36 rooms, suites and private cottages. Relax in the courtyard overlooking Cibolo Creek, or stop for cocktails in Tavern 128. There is even an on-site spa, which proves that you don't have to sacrifice luxury to enjoy quaint, historic accommodations.
